"コールドスポットに関しては、CMBを吸収する巨大なガス雲、あるいは物質の存在しないぽっかり開いた宇宙の穴といった見方や、かつてわれわれの宇宙と平行して存在していた別の宇宙の痕跡という説さえ発表されている。
しかし、コールドスポットは、CMBデータの調査で一般的に使われている統計手法の副産物であると彼らは考えているのだ。それは、
球状メキシコ帽型ウェーブレットSpherical Mexican Hat Waveletsと呼ばれる手法である。
Webサイト「arXiv.org」で発表された今回の研究では、もっとシンプルな2通りの統計手法が採用された。そして分析の結果、コールドスポットで確認されたCMB平均からの温度偏差は、宇宙のほかの領域と大差ないことが判明したのである。
