Apollo 16 launched on April 16, 1972 and landed on the moon on April 20.

Workers at the Stennis Space Center completed structural steel construction on the facility's new A-3 Test Stand. Approximately four million pounds of fabricated steel were used in erecting the 260-foot tall structure. When it’s complete with its on-stand fuel tanks, the new stand will allow engineers to test engines at simulated altitudes of up to 100,000 feet. This new A-3 test stand will be used to demonstrate the J-2X engine now in development. A direct descendant of the Apollo-era J-2 engine, the J-2X will power the upper stages of the Ares rockets that’ll propel astronauts to the International Space Station and the moon." 韓国の宇宙科学専門家らは、「ISSに数兆ウォン（数千億円）を投資した日本には、米国・ロシアと共に理事国として特定のプロジェクトを拒否できる権限がある。このため、事実上ISS運営は満場一致で行われる」と語った。
韓国政府としても、「東海独島」実験の取り消しを要求する日本の文部科学省の立場に対抗する策はない状況だったわけだ。このため、イ博士が宇宙に滞在するスペースがなくなり、8年間で250億ウォン（現在のレートで約18億7000万円）を投資した宇宙飛行士を誕生させる事業が一瞬で霧散する危機に直面することになった。"
