1980年、米軍はTCP/IPを正式軍用プロトコルとして採用し、1982年軍用ネットワークであるARPANET上ではTCP/IPだけを使うことが決定され、ほかのプロトコルは排除されることになった。1983年1月1日、インターネットの基幹を構成するARPANETからTCP/IP以外のプロトコルは消えた。
