Methane Discovery reveals Mars is not a Dead Planet
A team of NASA and university scientists has discovered 'substantial plumes' of methane floating through the atmosphere of Mars. The discovery indicates Mars is either biologically or geologically active.
http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2009/15jan_marsmethane.htm?list1073247

"Methane is quickly destroyed in the Martian atmosphere in a variety of ways, so our discovery of substantial plumes of methane in the northern hemisphere of Mars in 2003 indicates some ongoing process is releasing the gas,"
"Right now, we don’t have enough information to tell if biology or geology -- or both -- is producing the methane on Mars," said Mumma. "But it does tell us that the planet is still alive, at least in a geologic sense. It's as if Mars is challenging us, saying, hey, find out what this means.
The team found methane in the atmosphere of Mars by carefully observing the planet over several Mars years (and all Martian seasons) with NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility, run by the University of Hawaii, and the W. M. Keck telescope, both at Mauna Kea, Hawaii."

NASA Science Update to Discuss Mars Atmosphere Activity
WASHINGTON -- NASA will hold a science update at 2 p.m. EST, Thursday, Jan. 15, to discuss analysis of the Martian atmosphere that raises the possibility of life or geologic activity. The briefing will take place in the James E. Webb Memorial Auditorium at NASA Headquarters, 300 E St., S.W., Washington, and carried live on NASA Television.

Strong Release of Methane on Mars in Northern Summer 2003 -- Mumma et al., 10.1126/science.1165243 -- Science
"Accepted on January 6, 2009"
Using high-dispersion infrared spectrometers at three ground-based telescopes, we measured methane and water vapor simultaneously on Mars over several longitude intervals in (northern) early- and late-summer 2003 and near vernal equinox 2006.

Using high-dispersion infrared spectrometers at three ground-based telescopes, we measured methane and water vapor simultaneously on Mars over several longitude intervals in (northern) early- and late-summer 2003 and near vernal equinox 2006.

A new report from the US Government Accountability Office: NASA's Inspector General a budgetary black hole
"the shuttle, is a collection of 1970s-era technology that suffers failures that tend to be catastrophic.
The Bush era has seen the agency deal with controversies over the stifling of scientific information, while being handed a task that, by any reasonable expectation, is impossible: transition away from the shuttle to a new launch vehicle while maintaining the International Space Station and preparing for a manned mission to Mars―and do it all within a severely constrained budget.
